Philip Kindred Dick, máis coñecido como Philip K. Dick, nado o 16 de decembro de 1928 en Chicago (Illinois) e finado o 2 de marzo de 1982 en Santa Ana (California), foi un prolífico escritor e novelista estadounidense de ciencia ficción, que influíu notablemente en devandito xénero.

Aclamado en vida por contemporáneos como Robert A. Heinlein ou Stanislaw Lem, Dick obtivo pouco recoñecemento antes da súa morte. Tras esta, con todo, a adaptación ao cine de varias das súas novelas deulle a coñecer ao gran público. A súa obra é hoxe unha das máis populares da ciencia ficción e Dick gañou o recoñecemento do público e o respecto da crítica.

Deixando ao carón o enfoque simplista e optimista do mundo frecuente na "idade dourada" da ciencia ficción, Dick explorou sistematicamente a natureza enigmática da realidade e a humanidade nas súas novelas, poboadas por xente traballadora corrente máis que por superhomes galácticos. Adiantándose ao subxénero cyberpunk, Dick situou a acción de varias das súas novelas no mundo anómico de California do Norte. A súa aclamada novela The Man in the High Castle (1963, gañadora do Premio Hugo) é unha obra pioneira que mestura os xéneros da ciencia ficción e a historia alternativa. Tamén escribiu unha enorme cantidade de historias curtas e obras menores que foron publicadas por revistas pulp.

Estilo editar

As súas obras caracterízanse por unha sensación de constante erosión da realidade. A miúdo, os protagonistas descobren que os seus seres queridos (ou ata eles mesmos) son sen sabelo robots, alieníxenas, seres sobrenaturais, espías sometidos a lavados de cerebro, alucinacións, ou calquera combinación destes.
