O 31 de maio de 1911, Gaston Gallimard fíxose cargo da dirección das edicións da Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF), logo do pedido dos seus creadores: André Gide[1] e Jean Schlumberger.[2] Gide e Paul Claudel[3] inauguraron a nova editorial. Logo, outros grandes nomes da literatura francesa virían engrosar o catálogo: Marcel Proust,[4] Jules Supervielle,[5] André Malraux,[6] Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,[7] Jean-Paul Sartre,[8] René Char,[9] Simone de Beauvoir,[10] Maurice Merleau-Ponty,[11] Simone Weil,[12] Albert Camus,[13] Marguerite Duras,[14] Milan Kundera,[15] Raphaël Enthoven,[16] etc. 40 escritores obtiveron o Premio Nobel.[17] 37 escritores gañaron o Premio Goncourt.[18]

O 15 de xaneiro de 1976, morreu Gaston Gallimard e Claude asumiu a presidencia da editorial, onde permaneceu até 1988, cando deixou a dirección ao seu fillo Antoine,que en 2011 era o presidente.
