A carreira como actor de Finney comezou no teatro en 1958, nunha obra dirixida Charles Laughton. Dous anos despois debutou no cinema con The Entertainer, de Tony Richardson, protagonizada por Laurence Olivier.
A pesar de conseguir en 1963 a primeira das súas catro candidaturas ao Oscar, en 1968 as súas aparicións na pantalla volvéronse menos frecuentes, concentrándose no teatro. Traballou tamén na televisión, como en The Gathering Storm , no que interpretou a Winston Churchill e que lle fixo gañar varios premios.
