The Chieftains

The Chieftains é unha banda irlandesa de música tradicional, fundada en 1963, ano da gravación do seu primeiro LP titulado simplemente The Chieftains. O grupo rexistrou numerosos álbums de música tradicional tanto instrumental como cantada. Máis aló dos ritmos de danzas, toman inspiración de compositores antigos como Turlough O'Carolan, e producen unha música variada, de sonoridade particular. O seu directorio esténdese da canción de bar (os pubs irlandeses) á música sinfónica composta polo cine.

Os seus compoñentes: Seán Keane, Martín Fay, Derek Bell, Matt Molloy, Kevin Conneff e Paddy Moloney realizaron no grupo trinta e tres gravacións, a parte das realizadas por cada un por separado. O grupo tamén realizou proxectos para revitalizar o folclore irlandés aínda que ultimamente o grupo intentou levar a súa música cara a unha fusión coa música doutros artistas como poden ser The Corrs, Mark Knopfler, Mick Jagger, Sting, Carlos Núñez, Sinéad O'Connor, Kepa Junkera ou Ry Cooder. En 2013 foille concedida a Medalla Castelao.
