Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Elizabeth Cady Stanton, nada o 12 de novembro de 1815 e finada o 26 de outubro de 1902, foi unha activista estadounidense, abolicionista e figura destacada do movemento de mulleres. A súa Declaración de sentimentos, presentada na primeira convención de dereitos da muller, sostida en 1848 en Seneca Falls, Nova York, é a miúdo acreditada como o inicio dos movementos organizados de dereitos da muller e sufraxio feminino nos Estados Unidos.[1]

Antes de que Stanton reducise o seu enfoque político case exclusivamente aos dereitos da muller, foi unha activa abolicionista, xunto co seu esposo, Henry Brewster Stanton e o seu primo, Gerrit Smith. A diferenza de moitas persoas involucradas no movemento de dereitos da muller, Stanton abordou unha serie de cuestións relativas ás mulleres máis aló dos dereitos de sufraxio. As súas preocupacións incluíron os dereitos parentais e de custodia das mulleres, dereitos de propiedade, dereitos de emprego e ingresos, leis de divorcio, a saúde económica da familia e control da natalidade.[2] Tamén foi unha aberta partidaria do Movemento pola Temperanza do século XIX.

Despois da Guerra Civil Estadounidense, o compromiso de Stanton co sufraxio feminino causou un cisma no movemento de dereitos da muller, cando ela e Susan B. Anthony declinaron apoiar a Décimo cuarta e a Décimo quinta emenda á Constitución dos Estados Unidos de América e crearon unha nova asociación, a Asociación Nacional prol Sufraxio da Muller. Opuxéronse a outorgar maior protección legal e dereitos de sufraxio aos homes afroamericanos mentres se continuaba negando ás mulleres, negras e brancas, os mesmos dereitos. A súa posición sobre este tema, xunto cos seus pensamentos sobre o cristianismo organizado e os temas femininos máis aló dos dereitos de voto, levou á formación de dúas organizacións separadas de dereitos da muller que, finalmente, se reuniron con Stanton como presidenta da organización conxunta, aproximadamente vinte anos máis tarde.
