Deinococcus (do grego, deinos, "terrible, estraño" e κόκκος, kókkos, "gránulo"[1]) é un xénero[2] de bacterias do grupo Deinococcales[3][4] pertencente ao filo Deinococcus-Thermus, moi resistentes a condicións ambientais extremas. Estas bacterias teñen paredes celulares grosas con tinguidura grampositiva, pero presentan unha segunda membrana adicional, polo que estruturalmente son máis próximas ás bacterias gramnegativas. Os Deinococcus sobreviven aínda que o seu ADN sexa exposto a altas doses de radiación gamma e UV. Outras bacterias sufrirían cambios na súa estrutura para intentaren soportar a radiación, como a formación de endósporas, pero Deinococcus toléraa sen cambiar a súa forma celular e non se protexe formando unha estrutura dura. Tamén se caracterizan pola presenza do pigmento carotenoide deinoxantina, que lles dá a súa cor rosa.
