PAMBOEOTIA.hand and arm would be free and unembarrassed ;but in the preceding cut, copied from the RaccoltaMaffei, representing also a Roman emperor, weperceive that the clasp is on the left shoulder ;while in the cut below, the noble head of a warriorfrom the great Mosaic of Pompeii, we see thepaludamentum flying back in the charge, and theclasp nearly in front. It may be said that the lastis a Grecian figure ; but this, if true, is of no im-portance, since the chlamys and the paludamentumwere essentially, if not absolutely, the same. NoniusMarcellus considers the two terms synonymous,and Tacitus (Ann. xii. 56) tells how the splendidnaumachia exhibited by Claudius was viewed byAgrippina dressed clilamyde aurata, while Pliny(H. The colour of the paludamentum was commonlywhite or purple, and hence it was marked and re-membered that Crassus on the morning of thefatal battle of Carrhae went forth in a dark-colouredmantle.
