Dende o punto de vista demográfico, toda a comarca sufriu as consecuencias da [[emigración]] e do envellecemento demográfico, que tamén deixaron pegadas imborrables nas parroquias montañosas. Non obstante, Castro de Rei non experimentou as oscilacións doutros municipios lucenses no que se refire ás súas flutuacións demográficas. Ao longo de todo o século mantivo a súa poboación en torno aos seis ou sete millares, co cal a súa perda de poboación non foi tan alarmante como ocorreu nos municipios da montaña lucense.
