Conta a historia ficticia de Di Renjie (Andy Lau), un dos máis afamados oficiais da dinastía Tang, a quen e emperatriz Wu Zetian (Carina Lau) lle encarga resolver unha serie de inexplicables asasinatos cuxas vítimas son consumidas polas chamas.
