Cucujus é un xénero de escaravello da familia Cucujidae. Contén 19 especies e subespecies actualmente recoñecidas.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]

Descrición editar

As especies de Cucujus son de tamaño moderado (6-25 mm), moi comprimidas dorsoventralmente e de vivas cores, xeralmente vermellas e negras. Ademais, poden distinguirse doutros membros da familia porque a cabeza é xeralmente máis ancha que o pronoto con tempas prominentes, e os xenitais alongados e invertidos do macho teñen un flaxelo.^[5] O xénero vive na rexión holártica, e ten especies indíxenas de América do Norte, Europa e Asia. A súa maior diversidade dáse en Asia.^[3]

Ecoloxía editar

A bioloxía da maioría das especies do xénero non se coñece ben. Todos os estadios do animal viven baixo as codias das árbores, onde aparentemente son predadores.^[6] As larvas están tamén comprimidas dorsoventalmente. Cucujus clavipes puniceus, que vive ne América do Norte, foi moi investigada debido á súa capacidade de producir compostos anticonxelantes naturais.^[7]^[8]
