Descrición
English: "Working under cover", image of a workman operating a guncotton press behind protective rope screen from The Romance of Modern Chemistry by James Charles Philip. London, England, 1909.

Entitled "Working Under Cover," the rest of the caption reads "The machine in the background is a guncotton press, and the workman who operates the press is protected, in case of accident, by a rope screen." It is credited as a photo by "Reinhold Thiele & Co." (1856-1921) and reproduced "By permission of Sir Frederick Nathan", (1861 - 1933), the Superintendent of the Royal Gunpowder Works at Waltham Abbey.

The photographic reproduction depicts a man guarded by a rope screen as he operates a guncotton press. Guncotton, or nitrocellulose, is used in explosives.

This plate is found within The Romance of Modern Chemistry, which is a layman's introduction to topics in chemistry. Includes a history of chemistry along with alchemy and the philosopher's stone; elements including organic, invisible, metals, acids, alkalies, and water; chemical changes such as fire, freezing and explosions; chemistry of the stars; food; electricity; solutions and crystals; as well as discoveries in chemistry.
