Tn this field, to be specific would be in the realm of purespeculation. The present develop-ment of Industry, however, and ofthe art of communication, seems toindicate that here is a trend whichmay be expected to be of increasingImportance in future years. Needs of Communication byDefense Agencies It is a remarkable thing how ex-tensive and varied are the communi-cation requirements of the defenseagencies. Some of these are—toname but a few—communication sys-tems for the Air Defense network,both warning and control; for anti-aircraft batteries; for Civil Defensewarning and administrative net-

Thetelephone companies at the presenttime are providing private lines aloneaggregating 500,000 miles of cir-cuits. The variety and extent of useare rapidly increasing. It is a fortunate thing for thiscountry that the great growth of tele-phone communication has resulted ina vast network of telephone lines andinstallations throughout the countrywhich can quickly be arranged to takecare of the new defense requirementsof the nation. It is also fortunatethat the flexibility of the telephonesystem is such that a wide range ofnew services needed for the defenseagencies can be developed and placedin operation in short order.
