William Powell
William Horatio Powell, nado en Pittsburgh (Pensilvania) o 29 de xullo de 1892 e finado en Palm Springs (California) o 5 de marzo de 1984[1] foi un actor estadounidense.

Fillo único, Powell amosou axiña aptitudes para a interpretación. En 1907 marchou coa súa familia a Kansas City, Missouri, onde se graduou no instituto. Os Powell vivían a poucos quinteiros de distancia dos Carpenters, cuxa filla Harlean tamén triunfou en Hollywood co nome de Jean Harlow, mais ela e Powell non se coñeceron ata que xa eran actores recoñecidos.
Tralo instituto Powell marchou a Nova York para entrar na American Academy of Dramatic Arts con 18 anos. En 1912, xa graduado traballou en vodevís.[2] Tras varias experiencias con éxito en Broadway comezou a súa carreira cinematográfica en 1922.
O papel máis famoso de Powell foi o de Nick Charles en seis filmes da serie Thin Man, comezando con The Thin Man en 1934, baseados na novela de Dashiell Hammett. O papel de Nora, a súa dona, foi interpretado por Myrna Loy. A parella, unha das máis prolíficas de Hollywood, apareceu en catorce filmes xuntos.
En 1935 coincidiu con Jean Harlow en Reckless, comezando un romance con ela. Porén, Harlow morreu de uremia en xuño de 1937 antes de poder casar. Ese mesmo ano foille diagnosticado un cancro, dous feitos que lle provocaron non aceptar moitos papeis. Powell someteuse a cirurxía e a un tratamento experimental con radio e o curou en dous anos.
A carreira de Powell diminuíu considerablemente na década de 1940, a pesar de lograr en 1947 a súa terceira candidatura ao Oscar ao mellor actor por Life with Father. O seu último filme foi Mister Roberts (1955), con Henry Fonda, James Cagney e Jack Lemmon. A pesar das numerosas ofertas para volver ao cinema, rexeitounas todas, feliz no seu retiro.
Powell faleceu dun fallo cardíaco o 5 de marzo de 1984, aos noventa e un anos.
