Traxectoria

Naceu en Clay County e viviu nunha granxa ata que da década de 1890 a súa familia marchou a Kansas City onde o seu pai traballou como policía. Aos dezaseis anos marchou da casa a traballar nun circo. En 1904 atopou traballo en Nova York na ópera cómica, e comezou a traballar en Broadway.

O seu debut no cinema foi en 1913. En 1917 interpretou a Pancho Villa en Patria, cando este aínda estaba vivo. Volvería facer o papel en 1933 en Viva Villa!. Debido a súa voz foi contratado pola Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer no comezo do cinema sonoro. En 1932 gañou o Oscar ao mellor actor por The Champ.

Durante os anos trinta foi un dos actores mellor pagados de Hollywood. Seguiu traballando con éxito ata o seu pasamento en 1949.
