Gañou catro veces o Campionato Mundial de Rally, de forma consecutiva entre 1996 e 1999, sempre aos mandos dun Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, e finalizou terceiro en 2001 e quinto en 1995 e 2000. Mäkinen é o quinto piloto con máis carreiras gañadas do Campionato Mundial de Rally con 24, por detrás de Sébastien Loeb, Marcus Grönholm, Carlos Sainz e Colin McRae. Entre os seus éxitos destácanse catro vitorias no Rally de Monte Carlo, catro no Rally dos 1000 Lagos, tres no Rally de Suecia e dous no Rally Safari. Na súa carreira mundialista, Mäkinen logrou 45 podios e venceu en 362 tramos nas 139 probas disputadas.

A súa primeira vitoria no Mundial logrouna en 1994 no Rally dos 1000 Lagos cun Ford Escort RS Cosworth. Ao ano seguinte, Mäkinen fichou por Mitsubishi, compartindo marca con Kenneth Eriksson. Retirouse do mundo dos rally ao terminar a tempada 2003, cunha 3ª posición no Rally de Gran Bretaña. Os seus copilotos máis frecuentes foron Seppo Harjanne e Risto Mannisenmäki. Tamén resultou vencedor en 2000 da Carreira de Campións.
