Bailey escribiu principalmente relatos protagonizados por un detective con coñecementos médicos de nome Reggie Fortune. O maneirismo e fala de Fortune faino semellante a Lord Peter Wimsey pero as historias son máis escuras, e con frecuencia atinxe obsesión polo asasinato, corrupción policial, abuso infantil e outras inxustizas. Aínda que o mellor da serie de Mr. Fortune son as historias, tamén apareceu en varias novelas.

Un segundo personaxe, Josiah Clunk, é un avogado hipócrita que apareceu en once novelas entre 1930 e 1950, incluída The Sullen Sky Mystery (1935), a súa mellor obra.
