Epinephelus é o xénero tipo da subfamilia dos epinefelinos (Epinephelinae) peixes da familia dos serránidos (Serranidae), da orde dos perciformes (Perciformes).

As especies que compoñen o xénero son peixes de gran tamaño, corpo groso e cabeza grande, semellantes aos polipriónidos e coñecidos, con estes, cos nomes xenéricos de meros ou chernas.

Habitan nos mares e océanos tropicais e subtropicais.[3] En Galicia está citada unha das súas especies, Epinephelus marginatus, o mero de altura.[4][5][6]
