Comezou a actuar no teatro en 1895, interpretando papeis cómicos na compañía de Willie Edouin, mais a súa carreira viuse interrompida pola primeira guerra mundial, na que serviu como oficial. Trala guerra interpretou papeis protagonistas no West End.
Debutou no cinema en 1916 e chegou a participar en máis de oitenta filmes durante a súa vida, gañando en 1947 o Oscar ao mellor actor secundario por Miracle on 34th Street.
