Esta especie é a maior de todas as especies de fragatas. Although the feathers are black, the scapular feathers produce a purple iridescence when they reflect sunlight, in contrast to the male [[Great frigatebird|great frigatebird's]] green sheen. Females are black, but have a white breast and lower neck sides, a brown band on the wings, and a blue eye-ring that is diagnostic of the female of the species. Immature birds have a white head and underparts.▼

Esta especie é moi similar a outras fragatas e é de tamaño similar a todas elas menos á ''[[Fregata ariel]]'' (a menor de todas). Porén, carece dun esporón auxiliar branco, e os individuos novos mostran unha distintiva mancha don forma de diamante no ventre.
É silenciosa en voo, pero no niño fai varios sons repenicantes.
It spends days and nights on the wing, with an average ground speed of {{convert|10|kph|abbr=on}}, covering up to {{convert|223|km |abbr=on}} before landing. They alternately climb in [[thermal]]s, to altitudes occasionally as high as {{convert|2500|m|abbr=on}}, and descend to near the sea surface.
