Ælfwald chegou ao trono despois de que [[Aethelred I de Northumbria|Æthelred]], fillo de [[Aethelwald Moll de Northumbria|Æthelwald Moll]], fose deposto en 778<ref name="ReferenceA">{{Cita libro|título=The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle|editorial=Phoenix}}</ref>. Foi asasinado, probabelmente en [[Chesters]], polo ''ealdorman'' [[Sicga]], o 23 de setembro de 788 e enterrado na abadía de [[Hexham]] onde foi considerado un santo.

Ælfwald foi sucedido polo seu primo [[Osred II de Northumbria|Osred]], fillo de [[Ealhred de Northumbria|Alhred]] e [[Osgifu]] filla de Eadberht.
