During the 1950s Honvéd players such as Ferenc Puskás, Sándor Kocsis, József Bozsik and later, Zoltán Czibor formed the nucleus of legendary Mighty Magyars, helping Hungary become Olympic Champions in 1952 and 1954 World Cup finalists. The club itself also benefited, winning the Hungarian League in 1950, 1952, 1954, and 1955. The clubs reputation also spread beyond Hungary and in 1953 they were invited to England to play Wolves in a prestige friendly. Honvéd were leading 2-0 at half-time, but eventually lost 3-2.
