O sistema CD úsase xeralmente como un sistema de marcadores en [[inmunofenotipificación]] (ou inmunofenotipado), que permite a definición das células baseándose en que moléculas están presentes na súa superficie. Estes marcadores utilízanse a miúdo para asociar as células cunha determinada función inmune. Aínda que utilizar unha soa molécula CD para definir poboacións non é moi común (pero hai uns poucos exemplos), a combinación de marcadores permite establecer tipos celulares con definicións moi específicas no sistema inmunitario.
The CD system is commonly used as cell markers in [[immunophenotyping]], allowing cells to be defined based on what molecules are present on their surface. These markers are often used to associate cells with certain immune functions. While using one CD molecule to define populations is uncommon (though a few examples exist), combining markers has allowed for cell types with very specific definitions within the immune system.
