==Biografía==
Mertens estudou Ciencias Sociais e Políticas na Universidade de Leuven (graduándose en [[1975]]), así como Musicoloxía na Universidade Ghent; tamén estudou Teoría Musical e piano no Real Conservatorio de Gent e [[Bruxelas]]. En [[1978]], converteuse en produtor no entón BRT (Radiotelevisión Belga). Para Radio 2 (Radio Brabant) produciu concertos de [[Philip Glass]], Steve Reich, [[Terry Riley]], Meredith Monk, Urban Sax e outros, e tivo un programa chamado ''Funky Town'' xunto con Gust De Meyer (co que gravou o [[CD (informática)|CD]] experimental ''For Amusement Only'').
Coñecido sobre todo como compositor desde os últimos [[anos 1970|anos setenta]], Mertens é recoñecido pola súa obra ''Struggle for Pleasure'', a cal foi elixida como música para os anuncios do operador de [[GSM]] belga Proximus. É tamén coñecido pola súa peza ''Maximizing the Audience'', que foi composta para a obra de Jan Fabre ''The Power of Theatrical Madness'', estreada en [[1984]] en [[Venecia]], [[Italia]]. O estilo de Mertens, aínda que en continua evolución durante o transcurso da súa prolífica produción, roza o [[minimalismo]], a música ambiental e o ''avant-garde'', normalmente, en calquera caso, preservando a melodía das incursións que realiza nos mundos que explora.
