A fase final desputouse en [[Francia]]. A [[Selección ~~nacional~~ de fútbol de URSS\|URSS]] fíxose có trofeo, vencendo á [[Selección ~~nacional~~ de fútbol de Iugoslavia\|Iugoslavia]] no tempo engadido por 2-1. Nas clasificatorias participaron dezasete escadras, con notables ausencias coma a [[Selección ~~nacional~~ de fútbol de Alemaña\|Alemaña]] ou a [[Selección ~~nacional~~ de fútbol de Italia\|Italia]]. Os equipos xogaban eliminatorias a dobre partido (en casa e fóra), ata as semifinais e final que era a partido único. Estes últimos encontros desputáronse en [[Francia]]. A [[Selección ~~nacional~~ de fútbol de España\|Selección Española]] rexeitou viaxar á [[URSS]] para xogar a correspondente eliminatoria, así que foi descalificada do torneo. Así para as finais quedaron a [[Selección ~~nacional~~ de fútbol de URSS\|URSS]], a [[Selección ~~nacional~~ de fútbol de Iugoslavia\|Iugoslavia]], a [[Selección ~~nacional~~ de fútbol de Checoslovaquia\|Checoslovaquia]] e a [[Selección ~~nacional~~ de fútbol de Francia\|Francia]]. A URSS enfrontouse á Checoslovaquia na semifinal en [[Marsella]] vencendo por 3-0, namentres que Iugoslavia derrotou á Francia por 5-4. No encontro polo terceiro posto Checoslovaquia obtivo a vitoria por 2-0. Na final, Iugoslavia adiantouse no marcador pero a URSS, liderada polo lendario gardamallas [[Lev Yashin]] empatou no minuto 49. Os encontro rematou con resultado de emptate a 1, polo que se houbo de xoga-la prórroga, na que un gol de [[Viktor Ponedelnik]] lle deu á URSS o gol que lles fixo levarse o título de campión.
