Foi presidente e actualmente é vicepresidente da Association for the Study of Language in Prehistory (Asociación para o Estudo da Lingua na Prehistoria), foi tamén editor da revista Mother Tongue (1996-2003).
As áreas en que está especializado inclúen lingüística escandinava, lingüística do indoeuropeo, linguas africanas, linguas Dené-Caucasiano e máis paleolinguística (o estudo da Prehistoria a través dos datos lingüísticos).
