ENT In dealing with Herculaneum in the Past and Present we havetaken particular pains not to allow the main thesis of thisbook—that Herculaneum is the one site above all others whichought to be excavated—in any way to influence our treatment ofthe topography, the ethnography, the effect of the eruptions onthe ancient remains, and the actual state of the site since thegreat eruption. We have thought it right occasionally toemphasise our doubts as to the arguments of writers stronglysupporting our main thesis, when we did not feel satisfied thatthe data at our disposal warranted assurance on the points atissue. In spite of such scepticism, always called for in soundresearch, our conviction remains unshaken in the exceptionaladvantages which Herculaneum offers for the illustration ofHellenic life, art, and culture in a Graeco-Roman centre. The more we have always ourselves borne in mind the negative instances, the stronger is our assurance in thepositive grounds for our conviction. 55

Polybius (second centuryB.C.) appears to use it approximately in the current modernsense, though most maps to-day place Sinuessa at least, andsome Cales and Teanum, as towns of Latium, whereas heincludes them all in Campania. But in the days of theEmpire the name Campania came to be applied to the wholeof Augustuss First Region of Italy, which included inaddition Latium and other districts. It is necessary to make this clear at the outset, in order toavoid misunderstandings, but in practice the term is applied toa definite, ind
